GaSP BI MI Enhancements

Proposal Sponsor:
Tracey Slaven

Overview

The BI MI initiative is seeking to improve the University’s approach to management information, while the focus of the initiative is to facilitate and put in place organisation structures to change the University culture.  There will be opportunities for the BI MI initiative to make small scale changes to existing reporting systems in order to demonstrate the benefit of a sound BI MI approach and to garner support for the larger initiative.

The project would be limited to small scale developments.  The BI MI initiative will not sponsor time critical or large scale developments these will need to find another route.

The allocated budget will be called off to complete small scale developments as they are identified.

Following the first year of the BI MI Initiative a larger scale set of changes may be requested, however, it is envisaged that these will take place on their own merits.

Why is it needed/What are the benefits?:
  • Obtaining “buy-in” for the BI MI initiative.
  • Being able to produce some tangible change to prove the benefits in a robust BI MI approach – what benefits are expected, and in which area.

Fit with University Strategy

Enablers - Infrastructure

Objective: “ensure that we have the information we need to support learning, teaching, research and effective decision-making”

The BI MI Initiative is about gaining access to quality information to improve decision making processes.  Any enhancements to existing BI MI will be in line with this strategic enabler, while helping to foster the new BI MI culture in the University.

What would happen if the project did not take place?

The BI MI Initiative will be limited in ability to deliver “quick wins” in order to secure support for the larger initiative.  Where IS Applications cannot provide this support, it will mean that other sources will need to be considered including contractor staff or people with relevant skills in SSP.  Both these options would limit the areas that BI MI could use as a proving ground for better approaches to BI MI.

Who does it affect?

The full impact of the project is unknown, given that small scale changes will be identified as the BI MI initiative proceeds.  This is likely to be limited to some database work to better present information and Business Objects development, to support simplification of processes and/or improvement of reporting and reduced administration within other areas of the University.  The project is unlikely to introduce new infrastructure or systems.

Estimation Reference:

This project is primarily a route to deliver any quick wins to support the BI MI initiative.

Assumption that this project would be capped in relation to effort, so scope would be amended to stay within the estimate.

Assume this is not changing extracts from source systems, only small amendments to BOXI universes. While the estimate assumes this is not building new BOXI universe, it has been possible to do this in 2d – 15d previously, depending on the universe. Whether this would be undertaken would be dependent on prioritisation and scope.

Risk – changes proposed are not achievable on existing infrastructure and external costs may be required (low).
