In 2015/16 over 80% of all our academic courses are using Learn and we are actively engaged in reducing the number of other VLEs that we run, with the expectation that this number will rise further.
Our last major upgrade (from WebCT to Learn) was in June 2012 and previous major upgrades have tended to be every 5/6 years. Blackboard are now engaged in a re-write of the Learn product, branded Learn Ultra and have advised us that this product is likely to be available in initial form in 16/17 (SaaS only), but that functionality specific to the UK market may not be available. Accordingly we need to plan for an upgrade in 17/18, with the expectation of launching in time for the academic year 18/19. Already we are experiencing a drop in development support for the current version of Learn, with only the most significant issues being resolved through cumulative patch updates.
Blackboard have advised that Learn Ultra has some significant changes to the technology stack on which the product is based, and there is a high chance that the product will only be available in a hosted form (this is contiguous with Canvas – their main competitor in the US). This will significantly change aspects of how we manage the service, particularly with regard to integrations, and we should estimate this project with that possibility in mind.
The current APUC agreement under which we can purchase Blackboard Learn and Learn Mobile ends in July 2018. Blackboard have confirmed that they are talking to APUC already about a pricing scheme for Learn Ultra and we will continue to engage with any conversations through our APUC representative within Procurement (Billy Hislop).
We will be on an un-supported version of Learn, which is a significant risk given the number of courses that rely on it.
Ultra will be out 2016/17
