Overview

The University of Edinburgh Sustainable IT Programme

IT activity is not sustainable. There are associated mining, manufacturing, packaging, transport and operational carbon issues.

IT manufacturing is a very toxic process, involving the extraction of toxic raw materials, sometimes in conflict zones using child and slave labour, the destruction of plant and animal habitats, and the consumption of large amounts of water. IT equipment may also end up in landfill if it is not recycled or reused using the correct channels. It also uses energy throughout its life, contributing to the world's carbon emissions. As IT professionals we need to do our part.

The University's Sustainable IT Programme is centred around the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle and will be looking at three key areas: personal computing devices; green data centres and sustainable printing.
