for Brian Walker and Paul McGuire (MVMRes Portfolio Owner)
and Paul Clark (MVM Portfolio Manager) and Catherine Elliot (MVM Portfolio Owner)

Section One: Programme Commentary, RAG and Resources Update

Commentary:

During May,work progressed across the programme.

The overall status is AMBER due to  MVM314: SEBI - Data Collection and Modelling  being AMBER. The priorities have changed in the overall SEBI project which requires a review and re-scheduling of the milestones for our project. This is pending. It is very likely that the project will be extended beyond Jun 2017.

Please note that the project RAG status is following the revised guidelines: A one-page summary of the IS RAG status indicators is available on this page.

GREEN

Report by David Perry for May 2017

Achievements
  • RStudio Cluster has been re-licensed for Student use across all 6 nodes
  • RStudio Cluster has had continued use for Student teaching; performance is looking very good recently with processing loads being absorbed well by the cluster.
  • VoiceBank Server working well and having regular controlled software version rollouts to add functionality.
  • Attended OMERO (OME) Conference in Dundee to better understand deployment options for future "SaaS" roll outs.
  • RStudio Cluster has had a review and implementation of service monitoring processes
  • RStudio Cluster licensing model
Issues
  • None
Next Steps
  • Write up report before end of June 2017.

MVM302:

Compute and High Performance Compute Strategy

Category: Discretionary

Milestones

Target Date Title
05-May-17 Closure

RAG Status

GREEN

Report by Anthony Davie for May 2017

Achievements
  • Met with  Research Computing Programme business owner and reviewed re-submitted project request pro-forma. Programme Business Owner agreed to score.
  • Suggestions for improvements to MVM project request pro-forma captured, incorporated and new version of template re-drafted and back to Portfolio Manager and Programme Business Owner for MVMRES to approve
  • Met with MVM Research Committee to prioritise all existing (started and to start) MVMRES projects. Merging outcomes of this exercise with scoring of pro-forma, results in this project being 4th highest priority from 11 projects in 2016/2017 session.
Issues
  • Programme business owner time scales for response is protracted, due to work commitments. MVM302 still to be scored by Research business context and can't really progress to next steps until done.
Next Steps
  • Subject to Research Business Owner completing project scoring, move to assigning a project manager and scoping project resourcing, including budgeting and timescales and determining if a project board is required.
  • Assuming this project is approved and the previous step is completed, move to creating a project brief for stakeholder consideration, sign-off and project initiation.

MVM304:

Electronic Lab Notebook

Category: Discretionary

Milestones
Target Date Title
04-Mar-17 Closure

RAG Status

GREEN

Report by David Perry for May 2017

Achievements
  • Just one Research Group  (IGMM - Noor Gammoh) has adopted the use of RSPACE as an ELN.
  • Nigel Binns from Research Services has provisioned their RSPACE environment and Microsoft Surface devices have been  deployed within the Lab space for use with RSPACE.
Issues
  • There is still a lot of momentum within the Research Community to keep using paper lab notebooks. Their evolution is to digitize the paper lab notebook into a searchable .PDF file that can then be easily stored, shared and archived. We expect this approach will be adopted more often than the ELN.
Next Steps
  • Continue to support the Noor Gammoh's adoption of an ELN.
  • Write up final report for the project.

MVM305

Flexible Server hosting

Category: Discretionary

Target Date Title
31-Jul-17 Closure

RAG Status

GREEN

Report by Anthony Davie for May 2017

  • Met with MVM Research Committee to prioritise all existing (started and to start) MVMRES projects. Merging outcomes of this exercise with scoring of pro-forma, results in this project being 3rd highest priority from 11 projects in 2016/2017 session.
  • Discussed principles of context of projects projected goals, objectives, deliverables and drivers with UoE IS ITI Head of Research Services (RS), RI Campus Operating Officer, RI Head of Division for main Division generating and processing large data and utilising HPC and Portfolio owner. In principle, general agreement to proceed with "shift" to centralisation approach, where appropriate, as helps to achieve RI Core Capacity Grant (CCG) funding reduction aim's for RI.
  • UoE IS ITI Head of RS asked engagement as key stakeholder to wait until end of July '17, due to other infrastructure commitments (HPC and Backup refresh, DataVault infrastructure etc.).
  • Draft CCG concepts to support MVM305 underway, which will provide RI endorsement of MVM305 principles.
Issues
  • Complex nature of work involved, against background of CCG constraints and on-going work in other projects will impact this project.
Next Steps
  • To assign project manager and move towards project briefing.

  • Time scales for engagement with one main stakeholder (RS) moved back until Aug '17 but this doesn't adversely impact project from being scoped and brief formed.

Walled Garden Pathfinder

Category: Discretionary

Milestones
Target Date Title
31-Jul-17 Closure

RAG Status

GREEN

Report by David Perry for May 2017

Achievements in the last Period
  • CJD Walled Garden continues to work well for secure access to restricted data. More projects have been migrated into system.
  • Case studies are being created for known exemplar projects for the new RSS016 Walled Garden project. We have a few examples where complex 'Research Group IT Infrastructure Stacks' have been created and we would like to challenge the new infrastructure with complex real-world examples.
  • TS-Plus, the product providing the virtual desktop, has had a few issues with the persistence of security policies. This has been reviewed and appears to have been resolved now.
Next Steps
  • Data acquired from data acquisition devices outside of the walled garden need to have a workflow designed and a secure process implemented for migrating their data inside of the walled garden.
  • This project will be written up and concluded within June 2017.

MVM314:

SEBI - Data Collection and Modelling

Category: Discretionary

Milestones

(Revised milestones to be agreed with project team and sponsor based on monthly checkpoints - new milestones subject to feedback from External Assessment Panel and Community of Practice meetings in June).

RAG Status

AMBER

Report by Colin Watt for May 2017

Achievements in Last Period

  • SEBI team awayday to discuss long term objectives and strategy, and what technologies needed to underpin the long term service.
  • PM working with Data Analyst on OpenID testing.
  • Data Analyst has worked on adding sample datasets to SQLServer.
  • PM working with Data Analyst on OpenID testing.
  • Planning for meeting with External Assessment Panel (June).
  • Planning for meeting with Community of Practice (June).

Issues

  • No major issues at present.
  • SEBI team are having ongoing discussion with BMGF on overall and immediate priorities; this difference in prioritisation has meant delays to actioning the technical work which had been anticipated, so this us now likely to be postponed and pushed into 2017/18; revised milestones to be agreed following External Assessment Panel and Community of Practice meetings in June; this is unlikely to have short term impact on IS Apps technical resource.

Next Steps

  • Review feedback from EAP and COP meetings (June).
  • Complete OpenID testing.
  • Re-plan milestones based on uploading sample data sets to SQL Server and sample Tableau visualisations for the Community of Practice.
  • Review risks with Project Team.
  • Review budget and resourcing, and timeline for IS Apps input to project.

Current RAG status is AMBER due to the need to re-calibrate milestones due to changing priorities with the overall SEBI programme and BMGF. Once agreed, the status can return to GREEN.
