Report by David Anthony Davie for September 2016

Achievements:

  • Significant research compute partnership work to underpin the principles of the planning submission completed within 2 leading College research units. The partnerships are between the Universities ISG Research Services section and Human Genetics Unit and The Roslin Institute.
  • Completed a draft IT Project application planning submission for this project.

Issues:

  • No issues with the project progress.
  • The only area of concern with the principles of the planning submission, is with the standard University compute platforms automated staging of compute data.
    • This issue impacts, in particular, the Biological research compute context.
    • A workaround exists to mitigate the risk and additional support can be provided to researchers to ease the use of this workaround.

Next Steps:

  • Arrange meeting with Research Computing Programme business owner and IT Programme Manager to review planning submission, make a decision as to whether to approve and proceed, and if proceeding to score and prioritise the project proposal.
  • Subject to project approval, scoring and prioritisation, to move to assigning a project manager and scoping project resourcing, including budgeting and timescales and determining if a project board is required.
  • Assuming this project is approved and the previous step is completed, move to creating a project brief for stakeholder consideration, sign-off and project initiation.
