Recruitment of our Supervisor

The team are delighted to announce that Delia Georgescu will be joining us as the Student Intern Supervisor from the School of Education, starting on the 16th of March.  Delia’s main responsibility will be to supervise the students working within this project.

Delia’s previous line manager’s have been very encouraging and have allowed Delia to spend time with the Learning Spaces Technology team over the last couple of weeks.  This has included being part of our student inductions and we get the initial pilots up and running.

1st Steering Group

Our Steering Group convened on the 25th of February for the first time.  This was a very positive meeting where the Terms of Reference, Project Brief and outline project plan were approved.

Group members:

  • Robert Garnett, Timetabling Unit and Chair
  • Lesley Greer, Learning Spaces Technology.
  • David Brook, Estates Management.
  • Eileen Mullan, Estates Management (Helpdesk).
  • Helen Sang, CAHSS.
  • Delia Georgescu, Student Helper Supervisor within Learning Spaces Technology.
  • Victoria Dishon, CSE.  (Optional)
  • Jim Nisbet, CMVM.  (Optional)
  • Euan Murray, Head of Learning Spaces Technology.
  • Colin Forrest, Project and Programme Manager.

Student Recruitment and Inductions

We have recruited 18 students.  These students come from across the campus, with the majority have worked as student helpers on the lecture recording implementation.  All 18 have been inducted into the project and have their right to work checks complete.

During the inductions we explained that this was a new initiative and that we wanted the students to help us build the service from the ground up.  All the students have been positive and engaged.   We have also had several new applications through word of mouth, but we will wait until Delia begins in earnest to recruit more.

Initial Survey

Once inducted the first job we want the students to do is to survey all centrally managed rooms at least once.  We will ask them to do this electronically using their own device.  We will store this initial survey information within SharePoint where we analyse/triage the surveys.

 The Teaching Space Checks Application.

Using Microsoft tools, a simple app has been designed for the students to use with their phone.  The Teaching Spaces Checks applications allows students to choose rooms to do and check timetabling for available times.  Once they have done this, they will check the room against four main subjects with an option to add other information.

  • Fabric
  • Furniture
  • Writing Surfaces
  • Signage

The application also allows students to upload photos which attached to any issues they report.

Students have assisted with testing and feedback for the application and we have now begun the survey of all centrally managed rooms.

Risks

No Additional risks.

Next month.

  • We will continue with the survey throughout March.
  • Our Student Supervisor will start full time on the 16th of March.
  • We will begin to analyse the data coming in from the survey.  This will help us to create our checklist and build an initial picture of the teaching space across the campus.
  • Schedule further focus groups.
