The University website (UWS) is implemented on the Polopoly CMS platform. In 2011/12 a project (ITS087) was carried out to evaluate the Drupal CMS for use as an alternative platform for the University Website. The final report from ITS087 - Drupal Technical Evaluation recommended that if the University wished to progress with the Drupal CMS the next phase of the evaluation should be a project to test the solution in practice using a proof of concept (POC).

Project Summary:

The objectives for this project were identified as follows:

  1. To implement a fully supported new database infrastructure
  2. To increase transactional performance for appropriate applications
  3. To put in place a scalable solution that offers horizontal scaling, thus reducing future costs when growth is deemed necessary
  4. To ensure we fully utilise both data centres at King's Buildings and Appleton Tower

The deliverables for the project were:

·         The current Oracle database infrastructure has reached an age where it is no longer satisfying the demands made of it. This is constraining Applications Division’s ability to offer the best services to the University and in some cases performance has been badly impacted. The current infrastructure will shortly reach end of life and support will become an issue.
