The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) is one of three major components of the School of Physics and Astronomy (SoPA) and shares the Royal Observatory Edinburgh (ROE) site on Blackford Hill with the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC).

This project will procure the services of a Digital Badge Platform provider, which the University will seek to integrate into some of their existing platforms and the upcoming overall CPD platform, in line with the overall Digital Strategy, Strategy 2030 and DDI targets. Digital badges are verifiable, portable and stackable digital credentials with embedded metadata that validate a skill or achievement.

This project will onboard the Children collaborative with UNICEF project team and associated CRM data onto the University's IRM hosted on Salesforce via DataLab.  As the contract for the current CRM platform has concluded, there is the requirement to align to the University's platform to support their communication and engagement activities.

There is a requirement to undertake a new in-year sponsored project for Occupational Health.  The current eOPAS system, supplied by Civica, is only compatible with Internet Explorer, which is scheduled to be removed from support as of 25th June 2022.  The supplier has advised that hat there are no plans to make the main Genohsis application eOPAS work in any other browsers at this time, but have provided an upgraded version which will run with Microsoft Edge when configured in IE mode.

Through work on the DRS Data Safe Haven ISG Research Services (RSS) developed a Security Information and Event Monitoring tool, using an industry standard data analytics tool (SPLUNK). While this is a very complex and powerful tool the RSS team has been able to extend the Splunk inputs to a sub-set of RSS services (eg. DataStore).  

The use of Splunk with DataStore has already proved extremely valuable in identifying security vulnerabilities and confirming architectural configurations.

Cloud Infrastructure

 

This DRS project provides external specialist technical support for the essential regular software updates to the Eleanor computational cloud service. The underlying software which provides the Eleanor services is OpenStack, an industry standard open-source cloud computing software platform.  Due to its open source nature the Open Stack system typically requires a regular 6 monthly update cycle to maintain critical functionality and also for critical security updates.
