Completion Report
Project Summary:
This innovation project was underteken to explore additional resources to provide project management skills & training across the University.
We have explored the following options and produced prototype resources which we can now build on: -
- A mapping of the APM project management competencies to the training courses already offered within the University. This will support staff who are looking to expand their project management skills.
- An online presentation in Media Hopper on 'how to be a good project manager'
- An online 'test your project management' quiz in LEARN
- Exploratary work on project management communities of practise at other institutions

Analysis of Resource Usage:
Staff Usage Estimate: 10 days
Staff Usage Actual: 26 days
Staff Usage Variance: 160%
Other Resource Estimate: 3000 days
Other Resource Actual: 7280 days
Other Resource Variance: 143%
Explanation for variance:
Much of the work to be undertaken was using tools that we had no experience of (e.g. LEARN & Media Hopper) and the learning curve was steeper than anticipated.
Much of the work was undertaken a student who required additional support & guidance.
Key Learning Points:
Use project methodology - Although these innovation projects were deliberably managed with a 'light touch' project management approach, this meant that it was easy to lose focus and momentum due to the pressures of other higher priority work. If we undertake another innovation project int he future we would recommend that a proper brief and plan is drawn up,
