THIS PROJECT IS SECURE AND IS INTENTIONALLY UNPUBLISHED PLEASE DO NOT PUBLISH.

Different services use different captioning providers which makes the overall accuracy of automated caption inconsistent and provides different interfaces for staff who correct captions across the services. We aim to get the automated captioning as accurate as possible.  We also aim to make the experience of captioning across our media services consistent and straightforward as possible.

Additionally, no automated captioning service will provide perfect captions and so this project further proposes a human finishing service for captions. This would allow human finished captions across prioritised media. The service would be staffed by students. This builds on a successful short-life pilot in 2018/19 that established and evaluated the requirements for and costs of a student-led subtitling service. The pilot project made recommendations for future scope, sustainability, and resourcing (https://www.ed.ac.uk/information-services/subtitling-media-pilot).
