Overview

Background

The Visitor Registration System (VRS) is an administrative system, developed to record the presence of visitors on University property and provide them with access to a wide range of computer systems and facilities such as library services.

As the VRS application is now over 10 years old, there will be a phased approach to improvements to the application.

This project deals with the first of those phases and will focus on providing small functional and cosmetic improvements to the user interface, making it easier to use and as a result enhancing the user experience. The enhancements will concentrate on three areas:

  • Service selection will be modified so users cannot select an invalid combination.
  • More criteria will be added to the search.
  • Redundant fields will be identified and removed from input screens.

Scope

The scope of the project is to improve the usability within the VRS by making key changes to the user interface.

1. Search page for visit details: The business analysis stage will determine what search fields need to be added, and which ones are no longer required, and thus removed.

2. Results page: The results page is to be updated to give more information. This will be determined in the business analysis stage. The results will also need to be sortable by clicking on the column headings.

3. Services page: This page needs to be updated so that when someone selects a service, any depending services are automatically selected, and any that are not applicable are greyed out.  This is for the visitor’s page only, and not for the Identity Services tab.

This work is to be done to the existing version of the code. It is currently running on Coldfusion Mx 6, but the upgrade of this is out of scope for this project.
