The distributed nature of decision making in the University has been mirrored by the evolution of dispersed Business Intelligence and Management Information capability and capacity.
This has the benefit that the capability is close to the decision makers. However it can make it difficult to share information, improve skills and develop consistent approaches to handling data and delivering information.
There are both formal and informal communities already in existence which enable a degree of discussion, debate and consensus building. These can be built on to provide a sustainable platform that can be used to drive much more effective provision, higher quality and more impactful use of Business Intelligence and Management Information.
The opportunity is to create a community of interest that acts as partners with the IS Business Reporting and Analytics service to co-produce an environment that encourages and sustain effective use of evidence for decision making.
In the absence of this work there is a significant strategic risk that the current ad hoc approach to BI tools adoption and skills development will replicate itself with a new set of issues. This will undermine the University's ability to use Business Intelligence as a strategic tool.
