Background
Healthcare, Animal By-Product and Radioactive waste from various University premises must be disposed of safely and in accordance with legislative requirements. Different types of waste (e.g. sharps, Animal By-Product, Healthcare, Cytotoxic, etc) must be disposed of via different routes and effectively tracked to the point of treatment/destruction. In addition, producing departments must be recharged appropriately for waste they produce. Different charges are applied depending on the container type, size and contents/route.
The Waste and Environment Office (WEO) have recently tendered for Healthcare and Animal-by Product (previous Clinical) Waste and the Radioactive Waste contracts for the University. There are around 130 units producing between 0 and 500 bags/bins of this kind of waste each month. Recharge is via internal financial transfer. Additionally, there are a very small number of units that are external to the University (tenants in UoE buildings) who need to be recharged externally
A new system is needed to monitor waste within the university.
