The Next Big Thing on Campus!
The University’s Bristo Square has become home to a new artwork. The Next Big Thing… is a Series of Little Things by artist Susan Collis takes the form of a series of bronze circular inlets in the square’s surface. As though someone has walked through the square with a leaking tin of bronze coloured paint, these run as a long series of drips from McEwan Hall’s original main entrance across the square.
It is a subtle yet powerful and playful intervention in the square that tries to subvert expectations of bronze used in public art. Over 3 weeks over 1600 specially made bronze inlets were installed across the square. Installation, undertaken by Powderhall Bronze Foundry, was completed at the start of November.
This is the first major public art commission at the University for many years, and is an exciting addition to the wonderful redevelopment of McEwan Hall and Bristo Square. This is also Collis’ first ever public art commission. Known for her detailed sculptural works that combine everyday objects and materials with meticulously applied precious stones, metals or fine embroidery, Collis is interested in making us consider the real value of what we might at first think is ordinary or the result of an accident.
