The central (non-research) SAN infrastructure was procured in 2005 to provide a centralised storage environment for delivering core applications. This consisted of initial storage platforms, a storage network and backup solution, all over two sites.
A tiered storage environment was implemented providing mission critical class (tier 1) fast storage, a small amount of enterprise class (tier 2) fast storage and a bulk (tier 3) storage.
Over time, this infrastructure has been augmented by funds generated by sales, largely from IS internal purchasing. Expansion of the "bulk" (tier 3) storage was mainly through sales to Colleges for delivery of file data.
The original main storage infrastructure is approaching end of service life. To ensure continuity of service and to take advantage of cost reduction and technology advances, Information Services will procure a new storage environment. This environment will be suitable for delivering the coreUniversity applications and will provide an environment suitable to implement on-going service.
