Refurbish the Main Library Building in George Square to deliver an additional 2,000 study spaces and a facility which can support the University's future learning and research needs.

We need to:

  • respond to the continued growth in student numbers and the changing student study patterns which are putting increased pressure on the spaces in the building
  • recognize that Library users are increasingly using technology to access and work with information
  • make it easier for all Library users to know about and access our rich heritage collections which are an important part of the unique Edinburgh experience
  • create an environment which is welcoming to the community outside the University and helps the University explain its role in the wider world
  • deliver a space which continues to support the work of our researchers providing them with opportunities to collaborate with the public, to explain their research and a place which plays an important role in helping to build community
  • ensure that the building develops in a way that is green and sustainable
