As part of a programme of events and celebrations to mark their centenary, The King’s Building (KB) campus and College of Science and Engineering (CSE) provided funding to commission a permanent work of art to mark the campus’ milestone. Following the University Commissioning Guidelines process in 2019 the artist Katie Paterson was chosen to produce a new artwork for KB. Katie is a graduate of ECA and has been an honorary fellow of the University since 2013. The work she proposed takes the form of a series of Ideas - short haiku like three-lined sentences cut in metal. Each are inspired by scientific thought and research and will be displayed across multiple campus sites. The budget included payment of three artists to develop initial proposals for the commission, payment to Paterson for her time, studio costs, and production and installation costs of the full work. This budget also covered costs for the design of a map and website component to aid public engagement with the artwork. The budget does not include staff time and in-kind University resource.
