This project is surveying three of our major polar collections; (1) the papers of Dr William Speirs Bruce, (1867-1921) the oceanographer and explorer of the Weddell Sea region (2) the records of the expedition of HMS Challenger in 1872-1876, with numerous drawings and photographs (3) the archives of the whaling firm Christian Salvesen Ltd, which include log books and descriptions of the remote regions such as South Georgia where their business was conducted. The scoping and survey work will assess the condition of these three key collections, conduct basic rehousing and identify any advanced conservation requirements for future priority attention, as well as enhance our description and knowledge of these important collections.
The project has ended with the successful submission of a 31 page scoping report which has been sent to the Archive Manager and the Delmas Foundation who funded the project.
