Students (particularly WP) entering GeoSciences often lack the data literacy skills required to bridge the gap between SCQF levels 6 and 8, making it difficult to succeed and reach their potential at University.
This course aims to address this need by providing students with a transition MOOC (a University-style course in a secondary setting). The key focus will be on data literacy and will encompass mathematical and statistical calculation, programming, and graph interpretation. It will reflect current research activity in Climate Change and Sustainability across the three research institutes in the School of GeoSciences and be jointly devised and piloted with secondary schools in the Lothians. The course contributors will include a mix of current university students (from both taught and research degrees), early career researchers, and academic staff, utilising a range of learning techniques (e.g. flipped learning, peer work). Although the specific research areas will vary, the MOOC will be designed so that the skills learned in each section will build on those learned previously, contributing towards the understanding of Climate Change and Sustainability.
