Overview

Background

This project is a continuation of the work in College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine (CMVM) to decommission eeMec. There are three applications that need to be replaced before support for Classic ASP expires in October 2023. PathCAL, EROS and Labyrinth were identified as the priority applications for replacement in 20/21 following a survey completed in 19/20 by the Head of IT for CMVM.

These systems provide students with what are known as CALs (Computer Assisted Learning).  A CAL can contain many modules and each module can contain many individual pages of content. These CALs have largely been written over a decade ago by academics themselves or by internal or external people developing them on an academic's behalf. The system context for these three systems is more complex than just the three systems being replaced.

 

System Purpose/usage related to this project
EROS 
  • This is the underlying technology in which the CALs are built.
  • The CALS are used/accessed via PathCAL, JISC PathCAL, eeMec and eeMec 2017, Learn
PathCAL
  • This user-facing software sits on EROS but only calls on a subset of EROS' CALs
  • This application is accessed by UoE staff and students only
  • Navigation through PathCAL is linear, ie this is not branching* software
JISC PathCAL 
  • This version of PathCAL does not "sit" on EROS but is on University infrastructure
  • Usage is from external organisations , ie other Universities
  • This used to be a charged service through JISC Collections
  • Current access arrangements TBC
eeMec
  • This is the Live eeMec. This is acting as a password pass-through at the moment and will be decommissioned fully at the end of this project.
  • Some teaching content is directing students to CALs on EROS via eeMec
eeMec 2017
  • This is an archived read-only version of eeMec. 
  •  Some teaching content is directing students to CALs on EROS via eeMec 2017
Pathologia
  • This system was developed in CMVM with the intention to replace PathCAL however both systems are now available with overlap unclear at this stage in the project 
  • Usage is TBC
  • Overlap with MedCAL TBC
Labyrinth 
  • This application allows *branching as a user makes their way through the patient story, allowing different diagnostic decisions to lead to different outcomes 
  • This is a completely separate application to PathCAL and EROS
Articulate Storyline
  • This is branching software similar to Labyrinth
  • This software is already used in the Vets School and in Opthamology. Surgical Sciences have reviewed and believe it would fulfil their requirements as a replacement for Labyrinth
Learn
  • Some CALs on EROS are linked to  teaching material available in Learn  via a password pass-through eeMeC
    • Some courses on Learn link to PathCAL for students to access CALS through that application
MedCAL
  • Multisite Wordpress site containing Renal content
  • Set-up as a PathCAL like platform
  • Usage is TBC
  • Overlap with Pathologia TBC 
PG Surgical Sciences VLE
  • Some Labyrinth resources are linked to teaching material for MSc Surgical Sciences, and are linked from their bespoke VLE

 

Several points worth noting:

  • Flash content is used in many of the CALs and not supported by all major browsers since 31 December 2020 . Identifying owners for the CALs containing Flash content to determine priority is the priority work for this project given risk to teaching materials failing. Initial analysis shows that this will be an substantial piece of work and highly likely to required additional temporary resource to be recruited.
  • The project will need to determine what the ongoing access arrangements need to be in place, if any, for external organisations given the overhead for the University in replacing and maintaining these resources.
  • It may be that a replacement application does not need built if it is determined that Pathologia and Articulate Storyline are adequate and acceptable long-term replacements for PathCAL/EROS and Labyrinth. CAHSS use Articulate 360 and have piloted Xerte (HSS032) which could also be suitable replacement applications. While Xerte is currently supported by CAHSS, it is installed on central infrastructure and open to all (not just CAHSS).
  • The Interactive content team have blogged about H5P (free open HTML5 technology) being a potential technology that could be used for a replacement for Labyrinth.
  • The analysis should consider if one system would be able to provide the technology needed for both PathCAL (linear) and Labyrinth (branching) if a linear path could be provided by having a 1-to-1 branch relationship rather than a 1-to-many branch relationship. This would provide a consistent user experience and reduce the need to maintain more than one system/technology over time.
  • Using branching in principle is to be confirmed given that UG teaching is to a Single Best Answer.

  • Flash content in the CALs to be replaced where an owner has been identified and has confirmed the content is still valid and required.

Out of scope

  • Flash content that may exist in other applications in CMVM is not in scope of this project
  • Flash content where no owner/user is identified
  • If Pathologia is not the replacement solution for PathCAL/EROS, any updates to the application or content in Pathologia is out of scope of this project
