The Near Future Library project envisages the future of the Library, and asks what this means for the University of Edinburgh.
Visions of future libraries proliferate in popular culture and media, and are the topic of regular institutional reports and political discussion: there is both anxiety about and anticipation for the form the library will take; the role it will play in education, society and politics; the services it will provide; and the part that technology will play.
But what will the future mean for the University of Edinburgh? This project explores the Near Future Library through creative interpretations of the future possibilities for our library. By inviting student responses to this question and hosting a symposium exploring the notion of the Near Future Library, we aim to stimulate discussion and ideas, fostering a creative interest in the future of our Library and helping to inform future strategy.
The outcomes of this project will be made available online, and at the closing event.
