Overview

Background

The overall aim of Virtual Edinburgh is described on the project wiki: Virtual Edinburgh

The aim of Virtual Edinburgh (VE) is to make Edinburgh the Global City of Learning by turning the entire city and its environs into a pervasive, interactive learning environment, visible to the world.

This project will build on the work completed under SCE005, Virtual Edinburgh Business Case Support, by developing the practical aspects of what can be delivered in the following stages, and how this is facilitated across the different parts of IS involved, including EDINA and Service Management.

The benefit is that there will be a clear route planned for how the full Virtual Edinburgh vision can be accomplished, broken into stages that can be accomplished within the funding envelopes available (Stage 2 has Innovation Funding).

Scope

The figure below represents those components which are considered to be in scope:

Components within scope of this project

The scoping study will look at:

  • which components are needed to provide the Virtual Edinburgh full solution (as envisaged in stage 4)
  • what solution(s) could provide those components and what solution(s) are recommended for those components
  • what the approach would be to build those components, breaking down the work into stages according to the funding available
  • what the estimate would be for each of the stages (so that we can plan to do the next stage of work, for which we know we have the funding, and have an idea of what is needed for future work to get to stage 4)
  • what other projects or initiatives are planned or already under way within the University of Edinburgh which might impact or crossover with this project
  • how to ensure that the needs of future users are fulfilled

Objectives and Deliverables
