There isn’t a clear understanding of what the needs for High Performance Computing (HPC) across the schools are. The schools of Physics and Informatics have large requirements for HPC whereas other schools like Maths have less well documented needs.
There is also no consistency in current usage of HPC. Some schools have access to local HPC provision, while others are using ISG, EPCC services or external supplier services.
The College wants to inform the new College IT Strategy with the current needs for HPC across the schools and to highlight any gap in the existing HPC provision.
The College Head of IT is commissioning a gap analysis to gather that information and has already approached some schools requesting their key contact information ahead of this project starting.
This project aims to work with the local school IT computing representatives to capture:
- what services, both internal and external are being used currently
- the reasons for using each existing service
- any issues encountered with those services
- their awareness of their entitlement regarding services
- their awareness of what is available internally at the University of Edinburgh
The project will also work with HPC providers in schools, ISG and EPCC to map the current services in terms of access, support and costs.
The project will then carry out an analysis of the gaps between the current HPC needs and HPC provisions.
