**PLEASE NOTE THIS PROJECT MAPS THE SRS CONTRIBUTION TO RELATED SLSG PROJECT**
This project aims to develop Living Labs projects that relate to laboratory settings and provide outputs that can guide lab practices at the University
Background
“Living Labs” projects are a key tool that the University of Edinburgh intends to make greater use of to increase understanding about real-world issues and solutions to those issues. They engage academics with operational staff in order to form a mutually beneficial collaboration. Living Labs are a key part of SRS work.
Scope
This project intends to utilise our in-house academic expertise and knowledge to influence our operations; while at the same time providing a test-bed opportunity for academics and students to get real-world data for their research.
Objectives
- Develop ‘living labs’ projects which focus on issues and solutions for sustainable labs relating to procurement, energy consumption, and waste
Deliverables
- Reports of completed ‘living labs’ projects – with advice for lab sustainability
- Briefs of proposed ‘living labs’ projects
- In 2019-20 we plan to work on
- Lab plastics waste reduction
- Hazardous chemical substitution
- Lab energy behaviour change engagement monitoring (Ashworth)
- Cold storage internship (Cameron Berry)
- Initial results from long-term cold storage study at Roslin towards summer 2020?
Success Criteria
- Implementation of at least one ‘living labs’ project per year
- output of case studies and/or other communications materials to improve practices in future
Resources, Skills and Cost
- Andrew Arnott staff time
- Volunteer academics and students time
- Lab and/or Building Manager staff time (depending on project)
