Priority and Funding
50 day Project is funded by UniDesk. Project is opened as normal priority.
Impact and Dependencies
The main barriers to decommissioning the database servers are the current person import processes and the Quick Calls solution.
It is intended that these dependencies are de-coupled in a series of steps, in order to avoid risk to the overall UniDesk service.
A set of tasks have been captured as jiras: https://www.jira.is.ed.ac.uk/projects/SMI027A/issues/SMI027A-11?filter=allopenissues
There are a small number of MUST Do deliverables, so in agreement with the Project Sponsor, the project will focus on working through the prioritised jiras, depending on resource availability from colleagues across Service Management, Dev Services, and Production Management.
The team is optimistic that most of the person import processes for the UniDesk members will be migrated off Edinburgh's architecture this session, but the assumption is that local Database servers will remain for UoE UniDesk data imports beyond this session.
The proposed project milestones include decision points for:
- UniDesk DNS migration (agreed approach, costs)
- Quick Calls improvements to be rolled out
- Migration of member data import processes
- Agreement on infrastructure that can be removed this session
Lessons learned from previous projects
Resourcing the config and testing work for the individual environments on SMI024 was extremely challenging for Service Management. To reduce the challenge on this project, a dedicated time slot each week has been agreed.
