The UoE IoT Research & Innovation Service LoRaWAN network currently covers the city of Edinburgh.  The DDI funded WCDI IoT Programme intends extending this network across the Edinburgh Region City Deal (ECRD) area, which as well as the city of Edinburgh, includes West Lothian, Midlothian, East Lothian, Fife and the Borders.  The programme’s targets include deployment of 10,000 devices delivering 100,000 measurements

This project is the first project to deploy the LoRaWAN network outside of Edinburgh.   Phase 1 will be a pilot deployment to two schools in Midlothian and one school in each of the other CRD area regions.  Phase 2 will deploy to another 20-40 schools.  As schools are the best distributed group of buildings that are accessible to the UoE through the DDI Programme, and there is a common interest in the use of sensors as a context for coding and data, and common ground on the use of the climate change theme and wider STEM to spark an interest in data.
