The course will examine the mentoring relationship between teacher mentors and student teachers and will help teacher mentors develop a range of strategies to support beginning teachers. This will include how to provide student teachers with emotional and psychological support, how to build their confidence and how to encourage and support their critical interrogation of their own and others’ practice whilst providing them with appropriate degrees of challenge. There will be a focus on helping mentors develop their interpersonal skills and their ability to facilitate mentees’ critical reflection. The course will enable teacher mentors to examine how they can provide feed forward advice and feedback in a constructive manner tailored to the specific and changing needs (emotional as well as developmental) of the mentee. In addition, the course will enable teacher mentors to identify scaffolding strategies appropriate to support individual student teachers at their different developmental stages and examine ways in which they can empower student teachers and promote their learnacy. This course will explore theory and practice, incorporating the latest research-informed literature on mentoring.
