Overview

Background

This proposal is to upgrade the existing Oracle database, PUBS from Oracle 9.2 to 11.2. and to migrate it to the APPS database. PUBS is owned by the Registry.

The current version of the Oracle PUBS DEV, TEST and LIVE databases is 9.2. Oracle 9.2 is past its Extended Support date. The three PUBS databases should be upgraded to lower the cost to the University, to mitigate security issues and to enable the business owner to take advantage of new features which IS have currently implemented (SOA) and which IS will implement in the future.

PUBS DEV and PUBS TEST are schemas on the MIS database and will be upgraded and migrated to the APPS database.

PUBS LIVE (currently on a separate PUBS database) also will be upgraded and migrated to the APPS database.

Scope, Objectives and Deliverables

 Business Objectives

1Utilise a version of the underlying database that is supported by the supplier.

2

Deliver a more stable, better performing, feature-rich  and supported version of Oracle - Oracle 11g

3

Maintain or decrease the total cost of ownership of maintaining the Apps Oracle database environment.

4.Service levels of applications using PUBS LIVE to be maintained or improved.

Project Deliverables (including any scope limits)

1

Upgraded Oracle database estate to 11.2.

2.Any existing BOXI reporting will continue to function.
3.Applications using database continue to function

Out of Scope
1.Any fix of existing problems identified in the Oracle 9 PUBS LIVE, TEST or DEV environments.
2.Any change or update of existing applications using the Oracle 9 PUBS LIVE, TEST or DEV environments.

Benefits

Upgrading the PUBS databases will bring the following benefits:

  1. 11g is supported by the vendor and security patches are regularly produced and are applied by IS Applications. This will ensure continued support for the applications used by the business owner.
  2. New features are available in 11g which the business owner may be able to take advantage of.
  3. The cost to the university will be reduced due to the benefits of a consolidated technology layer. Management tools available do not operate fully on older versions, so maintenance of service is fractured. Single version level (or more consistent) will give ability to keep patching and proactive management streamlined.
  4.

Success Criteria

Upgrade of PUBS in DEV, TEST and LIVE to Oracle 11g.

The applications identified by the business owners continue to function with no adverse affect on current service levels.
