Overview

Background

As part of 2016/17 DTI UX programme of work, service planning and proposals were delivered for Student Digital Experience Standards. These are, to a greater degree, untested and in need of piloting and validation.

The focus in 2017/18 has been on piloting UX Consultancy and Training, which was also outlined as a service proposition in 2016/17.

2018/19 DTI funding brings the opportunity to focus on what we are now looking at as a Digital Experience Standards Service that encompasses the design framework, EdGEL, while continuing to evolve and improve consultancy and training services.

This project proposes to operate in a series of work packages.

Scope

Work Package 1: Pilot & evolve SDES process

  • Applying Student Digital Experience Standards (SDES) to pilots to enable the standards and their associated support and guidance framework to be refined and aligning across user experience consultancy, training, support, standards and design framework to present a coherent and sustainable proposition to the University.

Work Package 2: Applications Directorate adoption

  • Alignment of the human centred design process with the approaches to project methodologies and project/programme management, business requirements, software design and development gathering and software specification, procurement and implementation supported by Applications Directorate

Objectives & Deliverables

The deliverables are prioritised using the MoSCoW prioritisation method:

M=Must Have; S=Should Have; C=Could Have; W=Want

  • (M= has to be satisfied for the final solution to be acceptable in terms of delivery dates, compliance, viability etc.
  • S= high-priority requirement that should be included if possible -workarounds may be available
  • C= a nice-to-have requirement
  • W= want but will not be part of this project)

Retrospective pilot of the SDES service (including proof of the service delivery model via case studies) will support standardisation User Experience research and design processes across the University and help to ensure that the products/services delivered meet users’ needs.

Project teams and their governance frameworks are able to understand whether they’re likely to deliver useful and user-friendly digital services through their projects, and take remedial action at the earliest possible point to address any issues that use of SDES highlight

  1. Number of projects involved in SDES pilot, also expressed as a proportion of all eligible projects happening in 2018/19. Although numbers will be low they will provide high quality evidence.
  2. Pilot projects scoring against SDES through each phase
  3. Qualitative feedback from project teams and boards participating in pilots
